GENERAL NAME: Corrigan Juniper Bailey NICKNAMES: Last year she insisted to be called Corrigan and nothing else but she's loosened up (a little) and will respond to Cor. Only call her Corrie if you seek to irritate someone who owns a Beater's bat and knows how to use it. AGE/DOB: 15, December 14th BLOOD STATUS: Halfblood GENDER/PRONOUNS: Female, she/her SEXUALITY: She's not heterosexual but doesn't yet know how she identifies. Crushes are both plenty and fleeting. HOMETOWN: Austin, TX. The Baileys live in the Clarksville neighbourhood, in an old house that's larger than they need and more expensive to maintain than they can afford.
CONCEPT: Former child star proves her worth with sass, audacity, and big bat.
PHYSICALAPPEARANCE: Corrigan is used to being put in uncomfortable clothing and doesn't mind her uniform in principle, but she's only recently discovered that there are no repercussions for whining about it, so she... tends to do that a lot. She tries to personalize her uniform with "fun" pins and jewelry, and jackets and sweaters that don't necessarily abide by the dress code. As for casual wear, she likes colours and "FUN!". (The jury is out on what "FUN!" actually means.) She spends a lot of time picking out outfits that clash just enough, jeans or patterned leggings, patterned shirts, paisley bandanas (so many bandanas), jean jackets — her wardrobe is all over the place. HEIGHT: 5'4" and headed toward a growth spurt, if her bottomless stomach is any indication. PB: Zendaya Coleman. PERSONALITYLIKES: Quidditch, the Sweetwater All-Stars, thinking up a comeback on the spot instead of five days later in the shower, naming inanimate objects, line dancing, square dancing, winning, Super Soakers, football sometimes, praise when she thinks she's earned it, milkshakes, music ("all genres" but especially country, folk, and pop), performing, pink things, eating, sleeping, a good BBQ, her sisters, her curios, digging through antique stores, hunting, her rifle (it's pink camo and so cool), heist movies, heists in general DISLIKES: Feeling behind, failing, flailing, others mistreating Her People, praise when she doesn't think she's earned it (YET), being told she can't do A B or C because of X Y and Z, being spoken of only as one of the Baileys/Talbotts/Songbirds/etc. and not as a bad-ass young lady in her own right, shoes that haven't been broken in, walking in heels, acting PERSONALITY: FIRST IMPRESSION: SOCIABLE & STRONG-WILLED.Corrigan used to be a child star, the kind of kid whose day-to-day is ruled by shooting schedules and appearance agendas, planned by her agent and dictated by her manager. She's been out of that pace for three years but the constant demand to be working on or toward something has proven hard to shake.
Always in the middle of a crowded room and never shying from attention (whether it's good or bad), she comes across as a bright and curious young girl who wants to know everything about everything, always asking follow-up questions even if the topic seems inane — but beneath the surface-layer smiles is a mind that's always watching and calculating, sizing her up to the people around her... and in that mind, she rarely compares.
DETERMINED WITH A LOT TO PROVE.Corrigan's resting state isn't restful at all, but determined. Even though she received a perfectly suitable magical education before she arrived at Gooseberry, she still thinks she's behind her friends because she was raised primarily in No-Maj circles and her childhood was focused only on musical achievement and fame, so there's a chip on her shoulder about playing catch-up to her peers.
She's always on the lookout for the next chance to prove herself, even going so far as to make up her next project when there isn't one, justifying it by pointing out inane details that obviously prove everybody knows something she doesn't. If she finds out others have done something and she hasn't, she'll immediately find a way to do said thing... even if it's the kind of thing that gets her in trouble, or if she didn't think the plan all the way through and that got her in trouble.
Because of this, she does a lot of posturing to prove (she says to others, but really it's to herself) that she deserves to belong. Consider Quidditch: making it as a freshman reserve and then first string in sophomore year is a big freakin' deal BUT she didn't grow up tossing Bludgers in the back yard with her dad and she needs to show that she's worthy of LEGENDARY CAPTAIN LEONARDO FIORI'S POSITION OF YORE the Beater spot. If you make a joke about how she's too small to do the job she's going to find a way to shoot a Bludger past your face (oops, was that too close???); if you make a joke about her being one of the youngest members of the team, she'll rattle off pro Quidditch statistics and expect you to retaliate in kind. This behaviour has led to her accumulating some truly useless knowledge — can you list all the 2013 MACUSA state representatives in alphabetical order? Corrigan can and she'll argue if you try to tell her that's a pointless skill.
IMPULSIVE & OUTSPOKEN.Her emotional disposition can change easily: although she's neither stoic nor hyperactive and she considers herself a pragmatic person, she's still a teenaged girl in the process of carving out her place in the world, and as such, she gives in to emotional impulses more than she admits to.
She isn't afraid to speak her mind (especially when she's in one of those impulsive states!) but has a lot to learn about tact and can sound abrasive or dismissive when she does; when she cares about something "saying her piece" can easily slip into argumentative territory. If a situation looks bad and she cares about it she's going to work to change it for the better, but only if she does care enough, and that... isn't all that often. "Whatever, someone else'll fix it" is a contending mantra.
Growing up as a celebrity gave Corrigan a skewed perspective of some things, chief among them: privacy. She's used to people invading her time and pelting her with questions, so why shouldn't she get to do the same of others? When she wants to know something about you she'll ask but she lacks most of the filter that tell her when she's gone too far. Her questions can be intrusive or overbearing and she has little sense for when she's crossed a line.
MAKE-YOUR-OWN FAMILY.Corrigan is quick to adopt certain people into her close friends because she didn't have a lot of chances to make friends her age when she was younger. Her roommates, and the Ebonhide sophomore boys by extension, are one example of this, and their house Quidditch team is another. Both groups have become her de facto family in her mind whether they wanted it or not, and she will always defend them. If she finds out someone made a rude comment about a friend she might threaten the perpetrator even though she's a tiny sophomore and doesn't look terribly frightening. But she'll try — oh my, how she'll try.
TO THE WORLD: FUN BUT FLIGHTY.Corrigan is sassy and headstrong but easier to manipulate than that lets on because she just wants to be accepted, to find her place and her people. She's enthusiastic when she's in a good mood and always up for a good adventure without thinking to ask if it's a good adventure that also happens to abide by the rules. Friends are treated with adoration and loyalty, adversaries with snark. So many of her years before Gooseberry were spent in the company of adults who always had another thing to say about how she should behave, or should have behaved, that she puts more stock in the opinions of peers she respects than staff or guardians.
It's easy for her to dismiss people if they give a bad first impression. This is less because first impressions and important to her, and more because she doesn't often care to stick around and find out if it gets better — they had their chance and they blew it, now let's go do something FUN! If a friend crosses her or suddenly changes in disposition she's more likely to drop them than try to patch things up.
MIMICRY.Figuring out what's important to her can be confusing because she's still going through a lot of phases to ~find herself~ and a lot of those include emulating people she thinks are super cool like certain seniors on a particular Quidditch team. (It's Casper Kim. We're talking about Casper Kim. And Ulysses Quayle. And Clementine Decourt.) But if you're emulating someone, how do you mimic their values? That's, like... hard. Too hard, sometimes, so she drops interests and causes just as much as she acquires new ones — often.
DESIRE, ACHIEVEMENT, SUCCESS.Corrigan wants to achieve new things and succeed at the endeavours she's decided are worth her time; she craves approval and recognition, especially when it's for something she actually worked on and thinks deserves that praise. She's meticulous about the most important projects in her life (Quidditch, music) and, as an Ebonhide, never takes her goals lightly. She'll try anything once, but is that a virtue or a vice? If she wants something she'll just go for it, no waffling about whether or not it's wise, and she's used to getting the things that she wants. She's bold, audacious, and convinced that things will work out how she hopes — even when all signs point to No You're Totally Wrong About That. SIDEBAR: CURIOS.Another byproduct of Corrigan's No-Maj(ish) childhood is her fascination with magical curios: small objects purported to have magical properties, usually purchased from antique stores in wizarding neighbourhoods. It's obviously not exceptional for an object to be imbued with magic, but she loves finding new things that do something she doesn't expect. Her favourite finds are statuettes no more than a couple inches high that she lines up along the edge of her desk (although a couple are usually in her backpack). She has about a dozen so far, and each does something different: one flips of its own volition, another turns the surface area it rests on hot pink. The spellwork ranges from sophisticated to shoddy and this leads to the occasional misfire of one's charm into another's territory, creating unpredictable results.
TL;DR.+ friendly + bright + loyal = extrovert = determined = curious - sometimes too curious - tendency to drop it (you) like it's (you're) hot - crosses lines easily & without realizing there's a problem or, um, a line
SKILLSLANGUAGES SPOKEN: Fluent in English. Basic spoken and read Spanish (but terrible at written and don't expect great things from her grammar). PATRONUS: A golden eagle. Corrigan cannot cast the patronus charm. SKILLS:
- MUSIC. The Bailey clan is about as musical as you can get, and Corrigan is no exception. She's been singing since she began to talk and playing instruments since she began to thump on plastic xylophones with her tiny toddler fists.
- ★★★★★ SINGING (SOPRANO).
- ★★★★✩ ACOUSTIC GUITAR.
- ★★★★✩ HARMONICA. Corrigan delights in finding new songs to tackle on her harmonica. Wanna hear Gangsta's Paradise?
- MISC. INSTRUMENTS. While her favourites have always been guitar and harmonica, Corrigan has received training in a few other instruments. She can find her way around them but isn't particularly awesome at any. (Drums, saxophone, trombone.)
- ★★✩✩✩ COMPOSITION. She and her sisters have always been encouraged to write their own music. Her melodies are better than her lyrics.
- ★★✩✩✩ ACTING. Here's a dirty little secret: the sisters' acting on Fly High wasn't very sophisticated. (Well, except for Allegra — she's a natural). The studio relied more on the girls' musical talents, charisma, and enthusiasm than their ability to convince the audience of anything. Corrigan, meanwhile, thinks she's a half-decent actress but refused to join Drama Club on account of Making Her Own Way In The World.
- ★★★✩✩ QUIDDITCH. Quidditch has become Corrigan's passion, and although she knows she has some catching-up to do, she's working hard to get there. She has a head for strategy and spent last year studying every match from the bench, and applying what she thought she learned in every practice. Her aim is good (proof that hunting is a life skill) and she's quick on her broom, but she's better at trick shots than brute strength due to her size. She doesn't shy away from crowds and is the showier of the Ebonhide Beaters.
- ★★★✩✩ HUNTING (WHITE-TAILED DEER). Did you know that you can get your first hunting permit in Texas at the age of eight? Corrigan does, because she had one. She hunts deer with her dad, sister Stevie, and some of her dad's friends every Christmas. Her rifle is a Savage Arms Axis II XP Youth. Obviously it stays at home during the school year. (She's also not half bad at field dressing.)
HISTORYFAMILY MEMBERS: MOTHER. Ada Bailey, Halfblood. Formerly Ada Perrault & née Georgia Lynn Walker. From Hammond, Nebraska. One half of indie rock duet The Swings (singer, songwriter, harmonica); also writes for and performs with other artists. Ada asks more questions about Corrigan's grades and progress in Music class and Choir than about how her daughter enjoys Gooseberry, or what her friends are like. Their conversations grow more stilted each year and Corrigan finds her mother "more annoying" each time she returns home for a break.
FATHER. Matthew Bailey, No-Maj. From Detroit, Michigan. Other half of The Swings (singer, songwriter, acoustic guitar); also writes for and performs with other artists. Like Ada, Matt seems relatively uninterested in his daughter's life outside of musical pursuits and speaks of her Quidditch dreams as "just a phase." Corrigan and Matt have similar personalities but instead of getting along this leads them to clash on a regular basis. They do have neutral ground where they both get along: the hunting trip they take every Christmas with Stevie and some of Matt's friends.
SURROGATE GRANDMOTHER. Allegra "Gramma 'Legra" Lloyd, Halfblood. From Austin, Texas. Proprietor of Rudy's, a mom-and-pop diner she opened with her husband. (Rudy was their dog, a stupid but adoring mutt that died years before Corrigan was born. Her husband was Ira, who also died years before.) She took Ada and Matt under her wing shortly after they both arrived in Austin and treats them like her children and the Bailey sisters like her grandchildren. Corrigan has killed a lot of time in the booths of Rudy's.
SISTER. Allegra ("Legs" when being differentiated from Gramma Legra), 18. Newly graduated and testing her mettle as an actress in Manhattan; so far no good. SISTER. Stephanie ("Stevie"), 16. Junior at a local non-boarding school; she was too nervous about moving away to apply for Gooseberry. Corrigan's relationship with her parents may be strained but the three Bailey daughters are thick as thieves. Sure, they argue sometimes—and borrow makeup without asking—but they always talk it out and consider one another their BFFs.
Neither Matt nor Ada have maintained a relationship with their families in Michigan and Nebraska. HISTORY: FAMILY BACKGROUND. Georgia Lynn grew up on a dairy farm in western Nebraska that had been in the Walker family since time immemorial. Her mother was a Squib, bitter about her life and single-minded about the success of the farm, and her father was a halfblood troubled by decline in the dairy business who stubbornly refused to change "the way we always done things," abusing alcohol as a coping mechanism for being the Walker under whom the farm would finally crumble.
Georgia Lynn's future was writ for her: she would graduate high school and marry a local boy, settle down, and carry on the family business. She had bigger dreams, however, and when she turned 16 (of age according to MACUSA) she took matters into her own hands: she dropped out school and bought a train ticket as far away as she could make it with her meagre savings, leaving only a letter behind for her family.
Never one to plan for the long-term, Georgia Lynn changed her name on a whim from signs around one of the train stations — Ada's Hair Salon and Perrault Family Hardware. Ada Perrault ended up in Austin, Texas, where she got at a job at Rudy's and attempted to start her life over as a No-Maj. She'd always been a gifted singer who played harmonica to entertain herself, and she tried to make ends meet by busking on the roadside.
Matt left South Detroit at 17, heading south to find the birth mother for whom he only had a name (Naomi King) and a location (Austin, Texas). He arrived to find out she'd died six years prior and had no surviving relatives, but decided to stick around and see what Austin could do for him. He made do with odd jobs around the city and, like someone else we know, busking with his guitar.
FAMILY BACKGROUND: THE SWINGS.Georgia Lynn—I'm sorry, Ada—and Matt meet when he delivers produce to Rudy's. They flirt. They become friends. Both aspiring singer-songwriters with dreams of success, they band together and become a duo, calling themselves The Swings. They fall in love. Their relationship is passionate in every sense: loving, physical, but also tumultuous. They're both strong personalities that clash constantly.
The good news: they always make up. The bad news: they'll fight again soon.
A couple years later, after a show at a local dive, they get a break — a man in a suit (and by golly, what a suit it was!) approaches them about recording a demo. The demo leads to an LP, which leads to a record deal, and by some stroke of divine luck, The Swings become famous, seemingly overnight, at 21 and 22 years old. They experience the glory of fame and it's intoxicating. They spend money with abandon and live the hedonistic lifestyle only those barely out of adolescence are able to.
They spend a few years in the limelight, releasing records and living a nice cushy life in California, but some bad business deals and changing markets see their popularity wane. Their recording contract is cut; they try to release a couple albums themselves but, because they never spent (or saved) wisely, they have little money to support themselves with. They move back to Austin and supplement what cash they have left with meagre record sales and writing for other artists as they try to settle back into a modest life closer to their roots than their dreams. They aren't well pleased.
CHILDHOOD.Attempting to repair their relationship in their late twenties (BECAUSE THAT ALWAYS WORKS), they have three daughters: Allegra, named after the woman that had treated Ada and Matt like their own and had remained a presence in their lives; Stephanie, called "Stevie" for Stevie Nicks; and our girl Corrigan, the namesake of their neighbour who had driven Ada to the hospital for the delivery.
Ada had tried to leave the magical world behind when she left Nebraska, deeming it a connection to her family, and marrying a No-Maj made that easier to handle. The Bailey girls are raised in a mostly No-Maj household, aware of their magical ability but told little of the world their mother came from. This is frustrating, but what are you supposed to do?
All three daughters inherited their musical talent. Each has a gift for singing, and their instrumental education began as soon as they could smack Fisher-Price xylophone. They all have their favourites: Allegra's are the bass guitar and the cello, Stevie's are drums and the violin, and for Corrigan it's the acoustic guitar and her mother's old harmonica.
EARLY SCHOOLING & THE SONGBIRDS.Seeing their children's potential, Ada and Matt are bitten again by the celebrity bug — they think they've been given a second chance. They call in favours and get their children a half-decent agent. The girls audition for Fly High, a Nickelodeon-style television show about three sisters in a band called "The Songbirds." Their southern charm, natural musical talent, and actual sisterhood (how great that'll look in the press kits!) get them the gig.
They become overnight sensations at the tender ages of 8, 9, and 11. The show is surface-level stuff about three sisters, the Talbotts, who write their own music and live their glamourous lives as pop stars, juggling the many demands of childhood, fame, and school. The Baileys' lives change just as fast, with appearances on talk shows, interviews in Teen Vogue, and hefty paycheques from promotional contracts. They play live shows as The Songbirds at family-friendly festivals to crowds of excited pre-teen girls. In summary, the Baileys Make it Big.
The girls' daily lives are kept to a tight schedule. They record all year round, filming for half the year and doing promotional appearances for the other half. They're enrolled in a magical local K-8 day school with tutors to supplement the (many) times they have to travel for an appearance. It's a little weird to be No-Maj famous then have articles talk about a school nobody's ever heard of, but their manager insists it's "an exclusive institution" and "the girls like their privacy" (even though that seems to be one of the only things private about their lives). They have little time to themselves.
Corrigan loves the attention at first. She loves being recognized and "appreciated" and being famous — it's what her parents had always told her about! She's pretty sure this is what their lives had been like in "the good old days!" It's hard to keep real friends but she grows close with her siblings as they're the only static presences around her age. She considers this life normal and doesn't know otherwise.
WHAT'S "SNITCHES," PRECIOUS?Corrigan's interests begin to deviate from music. Each Songbird had a persona and Corrie (as their characters had their own first names but hers went by "Corrie" to make things easier for the audience) was The Sporty One. She hadn't paid much mind to sports before because it was never something that her family talked about — it had always been "music this" and "when we played at CBGB..." Playing the athletic sister had led her to pay more attention to sports, and one of her tutors, Mr. Meehan, opened her world to Quidditch. She had minimal experience on brooms but began to make time when she could, listening wide-eyed to all of her tutor's tales of his time as a second-string Beater for the Sweetwater All-Stars. (He'd left professional sports when he realized that he would rather dedicate his time to his young children.)
Fly High's popularity persists for four years but ultimately it was just a money-making fad manufactured by a corporation. The sisters' contracts are not renewed for a fifth season because the parent company "wants to go in a new direction." Their agent finds them other opportunities—a tween drama, a vampire comedy—but their parents always refuse to let them audition because "you should focus on your music, that's what'll get you places."
The girls return full-time to their day school, restless in class because they're so used to studying on their own time and in different environments. Corrigan is torn. She's sad that the lifestyle they've been accustomed to has come to an end but she's beginning to explore what it means to be her own person, and that's exciting! She joins her school's little Quidditch team and is disappointed to discover that the Bludgers are actually just dodgeballs charmed to look like iron death balls.
Mr. Meehan is also the one responsible for planting the idea of Gooseberry in Corrigan's head. Her parents aren't convinced at first because they want to try The Songbirds again but this time as a pop group without the television show or personas. Stevie likes the idea, but both Allegra and Corrigan turn it down, both fighting to do their own things. After a lot of fights and cool-downs, Ada and Matt allow Corrigan to apply to Gooseberry but only for a trial year. Its reputation for the arts is the only reason she's allowed to go, as it can be considered "professional training and experience."
And heck, the staff there have connections. Maybe this will be a good thing.
GOOSEBERRY HIGH: FRESHMAN YEAR.Corrigan isn't thrilled to leave her siblings but she has the stubborn determination of a tween who wants to be her own person.
She enters Gooseberry (with a music scholarship!) determined to do two things: (1) to make up for lost time, and (2) become to reshape herself into her own persona. She has a new haircut and a new wardrobe. She tries to distance herself from The Songbirds by insisting people call her "Corrigan." She tries to forge new friendships (sometimes by force) and get by as more than a Muggleborn in disguise. It doesn't always go perfectly, but it goes well enough.
After a summer spent doing little but playing her guitar and practising her flying, she exceeds expectations and makes it onto her house's Quidditch reserves. Sure, she spends the entire year on the bench, but she uses that time to study the pitch, her teammate's techniques, and practise. Quidditch has become her passion; flying is the only thing that gives her the same feeling as when she's playing guitar (playing what she wants on guitar, that is), and the thrill of strategizing is fascinating for her.
GOOSEBERRY HIGH: SOPHOMORE YEAR.She's still shocked that her parents let her return but didn't ask why because that would betray that she doesn't know. (It's because of her improvement as a musician and the praise of Ms. Thrussell during the Parent-Teacher Conferences.)
The biggest thing about this year is that she made first string?! That's... kind of unbelievable, and she's elated. She looks to the seniors on the team with starry-eyed adoration and thinks that being assigned Former Captain Leonardo Fiori's old position is not only a sign, but a grand responsibility of which she must prove herself worthy. So much of her time now is spent looking over reference books in the library, pestering Casper Kim about what he thinks, and practising on her own, that she's liable to let other aspects of her life fall by the wayside.
SCHOOLYEAR: Sophomore (Grade 10) HOUSE: Ebonhide SORTING: Corrigan would have done well in Coppertale or Azurcrest, as the fox and blue jay symbols insisted, and her deliberations nearly stalled the emblems — but just as Vector was rising from her seat, the girl was won over by the bear's resolute manner when it promised her that nothing would stop her from achieving her goals with Ebonhide at her side. WAND: 12", Dogwood, Wampus cat hair, springy. Dogwood lends itself to a quirky wand that lends more easily to fun than business, however, it has been known to act in dire situations. Corrigan's own wand can tend toward the temperamental, making spells go awry when she's feeling especially moody. As a dogwood wand, it refuses to perform non-verbal spells. She claims it's because it wants her to "prove it." Corrigan named her wand "Hank" and likes to talk of it as a person(ality) unto itself. It's not uncommon to hear hushed and desperate whispers of Oh, Hank doesn't want to cooperate today, huh? and Hank, c'mon, PLEASE?! in an otherwise silent classroom. FAMILIAR: Her sisters joined forces before she left for Gooseberry and bought her a domestic red factor canary. She named it "Bubba," their codename for an ornery producer on Fly High. This turned out to be an appropriate name for the little bird that seems to revel in strutting around and puffing out its teeny chest, but has no bite. CLASSES:
- CORE. Charms, Hermeticism, Potions, Transfiguration.
- ELECTIVE. Defense Against the Dark Arts, Magical Rudiments.
- ADVANCED STUDY. Music.
ADVANCED STUDY: Music. Musical pursuits come naturally to Corrigan, who is a gifted singer and quick study when it comes to instruments. Her favourites to play are acoustic guitar (which she plays in class), and harmonica (which is more a thing for her than for school). SENIOR PROJECT: lol. (It's going to have something to do with song and magic via Hermeticism, but she has other passions du jour at the moment. Like Quidditch. Has she mentioned Quidditch lately? She's, like, SUPER into it.) ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: Corrigan's a clever student whose marks are led by whims. She tends to focus only on what she wants to focus on, whether that means only one specific aspect of a subject at the expense of the rest of the lesson, or simply "Music instead of Transfiguration." Her best classes are Music (which both she enjoys and comes naturally to her) and Potions. Hermeticism may seem like an odd fit but the analytical aspects appeal to her strategy-driven brain, and although she isn't at the top of the class, she puts in real effort because she finds it interesting. Poor Charms often gets forgotten on account of Mr. Calderon-Boot not being imposing enough to strike fear in her heart. She's enrolled in Magical Rudiments because she still feels like she's behind in Life Skills. She studies best at her own pace in her own time, or in study groups — but not so well in classes with teachers trying to instruct 20 other kids at the same time. Although she can excel when she applies herself, most of her marks tend to hover in the B/B+ range. She asks a lot of questions when she's curious about a subject, however, if she's interested in a subject she asks so much that more than one teacher has adopted the "That's an interesting question, why don't you look it up in a book at the library?" approach to shutting her up. EXTRACURRICULARS:
- EBONHIDE QUIDDITCH, BEATER. See "Skills." Was a reserve last year.
- ARCHERY. She can't bring her rifle to school so this is the next best thing.
- CHOIR. Soprano; see "Skills."
- DUELLING & FENCING. Did she join this because half the Quidditch team are members? You betcha.
- GAMING. She and her sisters grew up with a couple consoles and it was a great way to pass the time. She's a little competitive when it comes to racing games and is trying to master Just Dance (she's not very good).
